If I’m being completely honest, after 3+ months of enduring the stifling heat and debating whether or not to wear cut-off shorts in the office, I’m welcoming the cooler temperatures with open arms! And an empty closet. I mean, it’s not completely empty. But there is plenty of space just waiting to be filled with the impending season’s wardrobe essentials: coats, boots, and the coziest of knitwear.
And with the capsule wardrobe still buzzing around on fashion blogs, there’s never been a better time to take a hard look at your online shopping cart and consider what items will transcend seasonal trends and which will be donated after only wearing them once or twice.
So in an effort to take on my own capsule wardrobe, I’m challenging myself to invest in those pieces I’ll love and want to wear year after year, despite the changing tides of fashion. Wardrobe essentials to mix-and-match in a cohesive, organized, well-edited closet!
Whether your style is lazy-girl chic, a little more feminine, or edgy with bohemian hints, these are the twelve wardrobe essentials every woman should invest in for Fall and Winter.
The Chunky Knit Sweater
While this might seem like an obvious starting place, every woman needs a reliable chunky sweater. And if there’s one thing I’m especially looking forward to wearing this fall, it’s cozy knits. Always a classic, chunky knit sweaters are the staple for any woman’s Fall wardrobe. And while I definitely like to keep a couple neutral solid colored options, I also like chunky sweaters with open backs, lace up fronts, ties on the side, or the classic chunky knit details for a feminine touch.
The 70’s Style Midi Denim Skirt
70’s style patterns and pieces have popped up on runways throughout the years, but I’m loving the comeback of button-down skirts. This is the perfect skirt for that in-between season. The midi length provides enough coverage from the cool temps that there’s no need for tights — just throw on your favorite booties and go!
The Sophisticated Blazer
“Soft and slouchy or trim and tailored, suits were a near-constant feature on the Fall runways,” says Hilary George-Parkin from Style Caster. And top models have shown us that blazers are as equally versatile as any bomber jacket — with that added touch of sophistication. Plus, you can easily take it from a full-on power suit to boyfriend jeans and a tee in one day!
The Wear Anywhere Blouse
You probably already have arsenal of button-ups in your closet. This season, add a feminine blouse into the mix or wake up your wardrobe with a bold pattern.
The Moto Leather Jacket
A classic leather jacket always adds the right amount of edge and instantly toughens up your look. Whether you’re in jeans and a tee, a flowy dress, or a cocktail dress, the decision to add a moto cropped leather jacket is always a good one.
The Mid-Heel Booties
I think it’s safe to say that ankle booties are here to stay this Fall, and for good reason. They’re endlessly versatile working with everything from jeans to dresses. With just a touch of height but a seriously comfy sole, I cannot get enough of this closet staple! One style that made its mark on some of the biggest runways was the fitted silhouette of the sock-meets-boot hybrid.
The Corduroy Anything & Everything
It’s been a while since the fashion world has seen you, corduroy. But it’s back! And I’m welcoming this trend with open arms. This throwback material is a statement in its own right, no matter which clothing piece you get it in.
The Stylish Yet Comfy Loafers
When you’re tired of wearing sandals but it’s still too hot out for boots, any sort of flats are a must. Personally, I’ve been obsessed with the slide loafers and loafer mules buzzing around all over fashion blogs. And while suede and canvas flats are usually the type I stock up on, it’s nice to have a durable leather pair for rainy days.
The Reliable Cardigan
No Fall wardrobe is complete without one or two good-quality, goes-with-everything cardigan. They can be worn over pretty much anything, anywhere. With such a huge selection, Nordstrom is my go-to place for cardigans.
The Chambray Button-Up
The all-denim trend made many appearances on NYFW runways, so it only seems right to find yourself a classic denim button-up. Plus, their versatility makes them a must-have for Fall — wear it open like a denim jacket, tied over a slip dress, layered underneath a sweater, or the classic Canadian Tuxedo look with denim-on-denim. And you can never have too many flannel button-ups which are just as versatile!
The Utility Coat
Every single year, aside from my denim and leather jackets, I like to have a trusty anorak (utility) jacket in my Fall wardrobe. Lightweight yet durable and it’s great for those misty/rainy mornings when you don’t want to mess up your new cashmere cardigan. I absolutely love pairing this style jacket with my combat boots for a chic military look.
The Luxe Jogger Pants
Athleisure just keeps getting cooler by the season, so now’s the time to make your closet even sportier. Take this aesthetic beyond your workout wardrobe, whether you go full tracksuit or just add a few jogger pants. It’s surprisingly easy to incorporate into everyday wear.
