With the longer days and fresh flowers entering our world, you may be thinking about ways you can give a little back to the earth that gives us so much. You could add some Spring vibes to your wardrobe in honor of all the beautiful blooms or bring some Mother Nature inside your home. But if you really want to make changes and go green, you’re going to have to take it a step further. Follow these six tips for some eco-friendly products to use in your daily routine, and you’ll be on the road to a greener lifestyle in no time!
Switch To Organic, Natural Makeup
Whether you’re the master of a smokey eye or prefer to go as natural as possible, makeup is most likely a part of your daily routine. Choosing organic options like Origins cosmetic line will give your face the glow you’re looking for while staying planet-friendly. Since you buy beauty products already, why not put a portion of what you spend towards environmentally responsible brands? Start by reading product labels carefully (which is my latest obsession) and figure out what natural, organic and vegan actually mean.
Origins is one of the original brands of natural skin care and essential if you’re looking for a respected company committed to preserving the environment while still offering quality makeup. They have a range of products including matte mineral foundations, mascaras, and more that are certified natural and cruelty-free cosmetics (i.e., pure plant- and mineral-based). All of their products are manufactured using renewable resources, wind energy and earth-friendly practices. Plus, they’re offering a free reusable tote with a purchase of $45!

Go Natural During Your Time Of The Month
Eeeer (awkward silence) . . . But hey! Tampons are a tool many of us women use monthly, so why not opt for the environmental-friendly alternatives. When choosing a new face wash or breakfast bar, I bet you at least glance at the ingredients list — but do you know what your tampons are made of? And did you know that many feminine products sold in the U.S. contain substances that are potentially harmful to our health — like synthetics and pesticides linked to endocrine disruption, cancer, and other devastating illnesses.
All-natural feminine care company Cora (recommended by Bustle, Refinery 29 and more) makes tampons that negate odors and are conveniently disposable. They’re 100 percent biodegradable, 100 percent cotton, 100 percent hypoallergenic and don’t use any chemicals, dyes, fragrances or synthetics. L. is another great company. Like Cora, they provide feminine care products to women in developing countries, plus they also sell/provide condoms. Both companies are inexpensive and deliver straight to your door step.

Clean With Green Products
It’s never too late to give your home an eco-friendly Spring Cleaning! Using natural, biodegradable cleaning products in your daily routine reduces your exposure to harsh toxins and other harmful chemicals. And it reduces the introduction of such substances into the environment. So the next time you run to the store for hand soap, laundry detergent or an all-purpose cleaner, go for a greener option.

It’s In The Bag
Not so fun fact: Americans use an estimated 102 billion plastic bags each year — or more than 500 per consumer. Rather than adding to this astronomical sum, snag one of BAGGU’s handy, reusable totes. Snag one of these handy totes instead — they fold up teeny tiny into their pouches, come in snazzy colors, and are built to last. Plus, they are so easy to throw in your bag, car, purse, back pocket and great to have around when you randomly need a bag.
Don’t Bottle It All Up
Bottled water is a huge drain on the environment: The U.S. public goes through about 50 billion water bottles a year, and most of those plastic containers aren’t recycled, according to Elizabeth Royte’s 2008 book Bottlemania: How Water Went on Sale and Why We Bought It. Using vast quantities of fossil fuels and water, these bottles are manufactured, filled, and shipped around the globe. Plus they aren’t biodegradable in any meaningful way: What you drink in a few minutes can stick around for a thousand years.
Like a bridge over troubled water, KOR’s sleek and reusable water bottles will rescue you from thirst and — just as important — that mountain of plastic bottles growing on your desk. And most likely in the back of your car. Kor’s unique filtration process uses a natural, coconut shell filter that’s completely sustainable and transforms ordinary tap water into pure, clean water.
Candles make everything special – unless their wicks are made from lead and the candle itself is full of chemicals that could cause cancer. Sound too dramatic? It’s not. Candles with lead-core wicks release five times the amount of lead considered to be dangerous for children (see note at end about lead-core wicks). Candles made from paraffin, a petroleum by-product, release carcinogenic soot when burned. Safer alternatives are those that use a cotton or paper wick, and are either unscented or scented with essential oils. The candles themselves should be made with 100 percent soy, beeswax, coconut wax, hemp oil, or some combination that doesn’t contain any paraffin. Candelles is a husband-and-wife team that uses all natural soy wax blended with only natural, phthalate-free fragrance oils, no additives at all.
Skeem sells matches and candles, and many of their products have containers that are meant to be reusable.
