Summer is slowly casting its glowing warmth over the planet and it won’t be long until it takes over with days full of sunshine and good vibes! With the start of a new season, I like to make a few tweaks to both my skincare routine and my beauty routine. And now that the heat and humidity are getting stronger, it only felt natural to lighten up on my makeup.
While I enjoy spending time out in the sun and getting a nice tan, I’m not too fond of the makeup meltdowns that come with the heat. Even if you’ve used a steadfast primer and diligently dusted on a layer of setting powder, you know that you’re still taking a gamble when you face off against summer’s steamy temps. High humidity, sweat and stagnant air are all enough to dislodge even the most resistant makeup. (You know this if you’ve ever stepped outside in 100 degree weather only to realize a few minutes late you’re in a pool of perspiration with a melted face.) This hellish cycle is enough to make you want to ditch makeup altogether!
I’m here to tell you that abstinence isn’t the only option. If you strategically stock your makeup bag with the right products, you’re face will be on point from dusk to dawn! From weightless foundations to airy fragrances, keep scrolling through to see how I lightened up my Summer beauty routine.
Lighten Up Your Formulas
With the temperatures rising, the last thing you need is a heavy foundation mixed with sweat clogging up your pores. So when searching for you new Summer beauty products, keep in mind that less is more — the less you put on, the less there is to slide off! Unlike in the past when I would cover my skin in heavy makeup, this Summer I’m focused on letting my skin breathe, even with makeup on! And with the right products, breathable skin is totally possible.
For my breathable skin, find products that achieve more than one goal. For example, instead of using a powder foundation, switch to a tinted moisturizer or BB cream that provides coverage, sun protection, and age-defying benefits! You’ll definitely still have the coverage but it’ll stand up better to the heat — plus, you’ll have an added bonus of sun protection. My favorite is Charlotte Tilbury’s ‘Magic’ Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 15 ($44). This foundation glides on like a dream and literally feels like a second skin. A concentrated mushroom extract improves firmness, tightens pores, and moisturizers. Whether you just need a bit of perfecting or you struggle with issues like acne or rosacea, this foundation will give you perfect-looking skin every single day!
I’ve also heard a lot about BareMinerals BareSkin Pure Brightening Serum Foundation ($29), which is a cheaper option, but I have yet to try it.
For that fresh, dewy complexion that truly lasts all day — even when exposed to heat and humidity — it’s all about that base! That’s why a good quality primer is non-negotiable in my Summer beauty routine. While it may be an extra step, primer creates a barrier between your skin and your makeup. It fills out any imperfections such as lines, pores and color-correcting, provides an even canvas for your foundation to go on smoothly, and prevents dreadful makeup meltdown!
With the right primer, you can have flawless, life-like skin. Laura Mercier’s Tinted Mositurizer Broad Spectrum SPF 20 ($44) does just that! In addition to its makeup prolonging prowess, this primer contains vitamins A, C and E which help protect the skin against aggressors like pollution. Plus, it provides protection from the sun’s harmful, damaging rays with broad spectrum SPF 20 UVB/UVA sunscreen. All while giving off a dewy, healthy-looking no-makeup look.
Stay Away From Dry Products
When it comes to choosing a formula, liquid tends to look more natural. Powder formulas sit on top of your skin, meaning there is ample opportunity for them to slide down your face at the first sign of moisture. Choose one that is medium to light coverage and buildable (rather than full coverage which has a tendency to look thick and cakey). Go for cream or gel bronzer and cream blush or cheek/lip stains. A lip-and-cheek multiple like BECCA Beach Lip and Blush Tint ($25) provides long-lasting color. The pigments range from sheer and natural to playful and bold + they’re super easy to blend.
Set Before You Sweat
I get it — setting spray is easy to dismiss, but trust me when I say that this stuff does wonders for your Summer beauty routine! In just three seconds, effectively seal your makeup and mattify your face. Even if your makeup is waterproof, it’s still smart to spritz a setting spray to ensure that it stays in place. It’s not necessarily a step I would do everyday, but if I know my makeup is going to be put to the test, I always finish my makeup with a few spritz. I really like Coola’s Classic Face SPF 30 Makeup Setting Spray ($36) on days that I know I’ll be outside and to give my face yet another shield of sun protection. On days when I really need to keep my makeup in place, I use Urban Decay’s All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray ($15-31). I’m not joking — this stuff literally holds my makeup in place for hours! You get a matte finish without looking too dry or stiff.
Blot It Out
While blotting linens are a must-have all year long, they’re especially useful during Summer. Long days spent outside in humid weather can often result in sweat and excess oil which leaves a not-so-charming shine. To get rid of that unwanted shine, keep a pack of blotting papers in your purse for discreet touchups. The blotting linens take the excess oil right off your skin and is a super quick fix. I’ve found bosica Green Tea Blotting Linens ($10) to be useful, especially in hotter climates or when I don’t have time to freshen up. I also really like tarte’s Not So Slick Oil-Absorbing Blotting Papers ($10); they really help in absorbing oil and they packaging is super fun. What’s great about these blotting wipes is that they reduce unnecessary shine without altering your makeup and they’re compact enough to carry around with you everywhere! Definitely add this to your Summer beauty routine.
