Spring Cleaning All 5 Areas Of Your Life

Hey there, friend. How has your first week of Spring been?! After the harshness and bitterness of Winter, it’s nice to see the earth come back to life, signaling a fresh, new beginning. It reminds me that, regardless of what happened last season, the next one is an invitation for a clean slate — a fresh start. A new season is a time of pruning and renewal — where you get rid of the meaningless and make space for the fresh and purposeful. That’s why I love Spring Cleaning. It allows you the freedom and space to do just that — clear any clutter that’s in your life.

Clutter can take on many forms — physical, mental, spiritual, relational and social are the main categories. And it’s super important to assess each area of your life, to see where you can clear the clutter, simplify and start anew.

For example, when I was at a place where I was trying to decide how the universe wanted me to pursue my goals and purpose, I was very overwhelmed and confused. To the point where I couldn’t choose which action to take! And it was during this time that I had to get really clear. Clear on my purpose, my goals and how the universe wanted me to go about pursuing them. All while developing myself further into who I wanted to be.

There was so much mental and spiritual clutter that was preventing me from seeing the signs and listening intuitively. So, in order to make sure that I was going in the right direction, I had to clear the clutter!

I share this story to encourage you that Spring Cleaning doesn’t have to be just a time to purge and refresh your physical space. But that you can (and should!) clean any area of your life that you feel like you need to purge, tend to and cultivate into a more balanced space. How are you supposed to have a clean start with all the old dirt still hanging around, right?

As we delve further into the new season, here are five areas to clear the clutter to help Spring Clean your body, mind and soul.

Physical Clutter

Anything that’s visibly and tangibly cluttering your space (i.e. your bedroom, wardrobe, office/desk, car, etc). These are the common areas where people tend to Spring Clean. Go through your possessions and ask yourself what can you keep, discard or give away.

Allie Casazza shares how you can go about this process in creating a minimal an purposeful home. If you find that you’re constantly overwhelmed by your amount of stuff, you may want to consider creating a more simplistic and minimal lifestyle.

Social Media/Internet & Electronics Clutter

If not used with purpose and intention, the internet and social media can become idols and a drain to space and time. Take an hour or so to Spring Clean your technology this season. Unsubscribe from spammy newsletters. Unfollow social media accounts and pages that you don’t frequent. Try a social media fast or a social media free weekend!

You may also want to pencil in another hour to go through old documents and photos on your computer, as well as on your phone.

Relational Clutter

Unfortunately, not all relationships are meant to last . . . They, too, can be cyclical and seasonal. Analyze where your current relationships stand. What relationships aren’t serving you anymore? Is there a certain relationship that’s draining you? What about a relationship where you could be a little more compassionate and intentional?

Observe your friendships, colleagues, family and romantic relationships and decide where you can clear the clutter. And, by ‘aren’t serving you,’ what relationships feel like too much give and not enough receive?

Heart Clutter

Is there any junk hiding in your heart? If so, this is the best time to do a heart check! What areas are resonating in your heart that need to be addressed? Have you been in a season of comparison and discontentment? Has fear and overwhelm rendered you lazy to your goals and dreams?

Conduct a heart check and see where you can clear the clutter.

Spiritual Clutter

Spiritual clutter is anything that’s preventing you from pursuing your goals intentionally and wholeheartedly. Ask yourself what’s holding you back spiritually. Are you constantly filling your head with negative self-talk? Or maybe you feel like you become irritable and frustrated too easily — having random outbursts of anger.

With a lighter heart and open mind, you now have the opportunity to Spring Clean your spiritual life. Whether you’re religious or not, you have to power to hit the reset button and start over with a shift in attitude and a reawakening to your values, dreams and sense of purpose for your life.

The concept of rebirth during Spring isn’t simply a seasonal metaphor. Spring is the perfect time to recreate ourselves and blossom into the beautiful potential we envision for our lives.

Now that you’ve identified the areas of your life where you can clear the clutter, here are some general tips to help you begin the internal Spring Cleaning process.

1. Take inventory

Identify what you are currently tolerating in your life, whether good or bad. Decide what you’re going to say no to and yes to this season. Then purge where necessary.

2. Get Clear

Taking inventory allows you to get clear on the next steps and puts you in a position where you can decide how to move forward. Ask the universe for clarity and guidance in this next season of life. If you want wisdom, ask for it and that’s exactly what you’ll receive!

3. Decide what’s at stake if things stay the same

What’s at sake if you let your internal clutter remain and things stay the same? What regrets will you have if you let yourself continue to go around the same mountain? The truth is, your situation won’t change until you do. 

An excellent quote by the great and late Albert Einstein: “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results.” Don’t be insane!! Decide, right now, that you’re going to do whatever it takes to move forward in your goals and purpose.

4. Create a strategy

A plan cannot be executed without a purposeful strategy. What needs to be done so you can effectively clear the clutter in your life? Do you need to renew your mindset? Learn new skills or habits? Create new solid intentions for the season? That is where the strategy needs to come into play.

5. Find accountability

Now that you have successfully taken inventory, gotten clear, and created a strategy, you need accountability. Iron sharpens iron, and you should reach out to someone who can encourage and build you up as you pursue you goals and purpose. Find yourself an account-abil-a-buddy! Someone who provides accountability, but also motivation, guidance and support while you go after your goals.

You don’t have to go through difficult times alone. And I bet there’s at least one person out there who is going through (or has gone through) the same thing that you are struggling with. Use the new season to seek out a new friend or mentor that you feel comfortable sharing your struggles with.

The truth is, you don’t have to wait until Spring or New Year’s Eve to restart your life. These things can be done in any season of life.
